About ERNI

This is ERNI – Always A Partner Swiss Businessman Ernst Rudolf Erni found ERNI & Co. in 1947, as a manufacturer of quality relays and control and lighting systems for the expanding European airport system market.

When Mr. Erni formed ERNI Eletroapparate GmbH in 1956, electromechanical Components were still in their infancy. His foresight in developing this highly Promising marking segment resulted initially in relay manufacturing at the Adelberg, Germany facility.

By 1968, high-density connectors had become an important product line extension. At the Electronica show in Munich that same year, ERNI introduced the world’s first DIN 41612 connector in production as a major component of the Standard 19” (482.6mm) Packaging System. ERNI was highly involved in the standardization of components through DIN-recognizing that the trend towards global manufacturing and maintenance demanded an accepted base product. In response to increased production demands , ERNI opened its first branch factory in Haubersbronn, Germany in 1969.

ERNI grew tremendously in the 1970s. In 1970, ERNI found ERNI Australia Pty., Ltd., in Melbourne and acquired ELTROTEC-Elektro GmbH, a manufacturer of fiber optic and infrared (IR) sensory devices and color identification equipment. The company introduced Edgecard connectors in 1971, and D-Subminiature connectors in 1975. In 1978, the ERNI Group added Regeltron computer GmbH (Germany), a systems and software manufacturer for industrial computer applications. By the late 1970s, as acceptance and integration of the DIN connector system spread worldwide, ERNI became one of the largest manufacturers of DIN 41612 connectors in the world.

As rapid growth in Europe continued, the United States market beckoned. ERNI Components Inc opened in Arlington Heights, lllinois, in 1980, Because of its rapid growth, ERNI Components established manufacturing operations and expanded its sales force to Richmond, Virginia in 19814.

Both European and North American operations continued to grow rapidly in the 1990s. In Europe, ERNI added Limitor GmbH (Germany), a manufacturer of thermostatic switches and its subsidiary, Limitor SARL (France), ERNI Eletrotechnik Ltd (Switzerland), a sales company of components and ERNI Licht-Technik AG (Switzerland), a supplier of lighting systems for airports. In North America, ERNI Components tripled its manufacturing capacity by relocating in 1944 to a new 50,000 square foot headquarters and manufacturing center in Chester, a suburb of Richmond. In May, 2000, ERNI celebrated the opening of a new expansion to this facility which doubled its size to over 100,000 square feet. Direct sales offices are located in California, Texas and New England. In 1995, ERNI Airlight Inc opened its US manufacturing and sales operations in Chester.

In 1996, the ERNI Group established Asia Pte Ltd in Singapore to service Asia and now has a sales presence throughout Asia.

In 2001, ERNI was awarded Gold Award from Huawei Technologies – a leading Chinese telecommunications provider, for being the best supplier in the interconnect solutions category.
